چکیده

ficial outdoor pond to maintain constant temperature. Technical grade nonylphenol (Sigma, Aldrich) was applied using a controlled release technique (Pfister et al. 1999) to maintain different levels of nonylphenol concentrations (9 to 112 gg/L) in the water column. The microcosms were set up in May. The application period started in June and lasted 45 days, followed by a period without application of nonylphenol (postapplication period) of 90 days. Four microcosms with no addition of nonylphenol served as controls.

Influence of nonylphenol on the microbial community of lake sediments in microcosms.

In this study the impact of nonylphenol, an estrogenic degradation product of alkylphenol polyethoxylates, on the microbial community structure in contaminated sediments of aquatic microcosms using in situ hybridization with fluorescently labeled oligonucleotides probes was investigated. A positive correlation between nonylphenol concentration and cell numbers of bacteria and microfungi as well...

The effects of crude oil on marine microbial communities in sediments from the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea: A microcosm experiment

Changes in the microbial community in response to catastrophic oil spills in marine and fresh water environments have been well documented. Molecular methods provide tools for analyzing the entire bacterial community, covering also those bacteria that have not been cultured in the laboratory. In this study, four different microcosms were set up containing sediments collected from the Persian Gu...

Invasive dreissenid mussels and benthic algae in Lake Michigan: characterizing effects on sediment bacterial communities.

Dreissenid mussels have invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes causing dramatic changes to benthic-pelagic interactions. Despite research on food web impacts, there is limited data on mussel effects on benthic bacterial communities. This study examined effects of dreissenid mussels and benthic algae on sediment bacterial community composition and diversity. Triplicate experimental sediment plus lak...

Invertebrate footprints on detritus processing, bacterial community structure, and spatiotemporal redox profiles

Detritus processing is driven by a complex interplay between macroinvertebrate and microbial activities. Bioturbation/feeding activities of invertebrates in sediments are known to influence decomposition rates. However, direct effects of invertebrates on bacterial communities and detritus processing remain ill-defined, mainly because identifying interactions between invertebrates and sediments ...
